Exciting opportunity at Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site in Olathe, Kansas, a city government owned facility operated through its Parks and Recreation Department. Built in 1865, the Mahaffie home is the only intact stagecoach stop remaining on the Santa Fe Trail preserved as a public museum. Mahaffie Historic Site is a living history facility interpreting stagecoach travel, agriculture and rural life, and the Border and Civil Wars in Kansas, in the period 1855 to 1875. The Interpretive Specialist for Daily Programming & Collections is responsible for developing visitor experiences and expanding the site’s overall interpretive program and special events by working closely with other staff. Specifically, the position oversees the daily interpretive program for children and adults with duties that include: training seasonal and permanent staff and volunteers in mid-19th century lifeways and interpretive methodology; scheduling staff and volunteers; managing the site’s period clothing program; and directly participating in the interpretive program on a regular basis. Also serves as Collections Manager for the site and for other historical collections owned by the City of Olathe. Bachelor’s degree in History, Museum Studies, Historical Administration, Cultural Geography, Education, or related studies required. Minimum of one year of previous experience in a similar position required. Successful candidate will be devoted to providing top-quality visitor experiences; be team-oriented and possess strong interpersonal skills; and demonstrate experience and education applicable to the position.
