SESSIONS:

Interpretation, Marketing, Technology, Collections, Finance we follow many paths in our work. The people we interpret had their own trails to travel. Join us on the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon Trails as we discover the material culture and processes of travel and transportation in the past, and explore some of the new trails we must travel today.

Areas of Interest

Topics of interest for the conference could include:

Oxen, Horses, and those Beasts of Burden
Private Foundation grant writing
New approaches and latest technology of electronic media
Wagons and Wagon Making for the western trails
Steamboats and river travel
Steam train technology and travel by rail
The material culture of travel

Santa Fe Trail two-way highway of cultural exchange

Interpreting Travel panel of sites with inns, hotels, stagecoach stops
Facing Finances panel of speakers on current challenges and creative funding and marketing ideas
New Angles on Old Stories research for interpretation
Food for the Road: Living History its not just for breakfast anymore

Host Site: Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site is owned by the City of Olathe, Kansas and administered through its Parks and Recreation Department. The farm was established in 1858 on the Westport Route of the Santa Fe Trail. The stone farmhouse built in 1865 is the only intact stagecoach stop left on the Santa Fe Trail preserved as a public museum/historic site. Mahaffie Historic Site is a certified component of todays Santa Fe National Historic Trail by the National Park Service.

Interpretive Specialist for Daily Programming - Olathe, Kansas

Exciting opportunity at Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site in Olathe, Kansas, a city government owned facility operated through its Parks and Recreation Department. Built in 1865, the Mahaffie home is the only intact stagecoach stop remaining on the Santa Fe Trail preserved as a public museum. Mahaffie Historic Site is a living history facility interpreting stagecoach travel, agriculture and rural life, and the Border and Civil Wars in Kansas, in the period 1855 to 1875. The Interpretive Specialist for Daily Programming & Collections is responsible for developing visitor experiences and expanding the sites overall interpretive program and special events by working closely with other staff. Specifically, the position oversees the daily interpretive program for children and adults with duties that include: training seasonal and permanent staff and volunteers in mid-19^th century lifeways and interpretive methodology; scheduling staff and volunteers; managing the sites period clothing program; and directly participating in the interpretive program on a regular basis. Also serves as Collections Manager for the site and for other historical collections owned by the City of Olathe. Bachelors degree in History, Museum Studies, Historical Administration, Cultural Geography, Education, or related studies required. Minimum of one year of previous experience in a similar position required. Successful candidate will be devoted to providing top-quality visitor experiences; be team-oriented and possess strong interpersonal skills; and demonstrate experience and education applicable to the position. Must successfully pass a background investigation, physical, and drug screen. Hours: Starting Salary: $26,880 - $34,460/yr. DOQ with strong benefit package. 19th century photographic cases

My name is Michael Rhodes, I make 19th century style cases for wet plate images, dags, ambrotypes, tintypes. A few things that make my cases unique.
they are made by making a mold of an original case made in the mid to late 1800's.
They are so detailed that every line in the original paper or leather shows, every crease, tiny tear, wear marks etc.
They are made from a urathane resin that is chip, impact, mildew resistaint, and UV protected.
I'm pleased to offer my cases to modern day wet plate photographers, collectors and museums.
My cases will allow you to let everyone hold history in there hands, without the worry of damaging an original.
I welcome all comments and questions.

Video games, the internet, amusement parks, and other forms of technology and entertainment are making it increasingly important for museums, archives, and historic sites to adapt and understand the needs of their visitors. How can these institutions remain relevant and adhere to their missions while serving the needs of a technologically advanced society? These are questions we hope to answer at the 2010 Eastern Illinois University Historical Administration Program Association Symposium. We are seeking presentation proposals that will illustrate how your institution is bridging this gap. Suggested presentation themes include:

Insurance Question

Hi,
I am looking for advise about insurance for a house museum that is run by our county.
Currently, only the building and display items are insured, there is no coverage on artifacts ?!?!?!?!?! When I asked why, the board advised "Since all artifacts were donated (free), why spend money to insure them?"
I am pushing for coverage of artifacts but running into opposition. Anyone connected with a house museum knowledgeable about your insurance policy any information would be GREATLY appreciated.

Wanted: Merino Ram

I am looking for a merino ram. I would prefer a ram I could use in this year's breeding (I breed around Christmas), but I would also be willing to reserve a ram lamb born this spring (2010) that could be used for next year's breeding.
